About Pine Ridge Recreation Area

Pine Ridge Recreation Area is located within the southern portion of California's Los Padres National Forest, situated in Monterey County along the rugged coastline and forested mountain terrain. The area is characterized by dense mixed conifer forests including pine, fir, and oak species, with elevation ranging from about 2,000 to over 4,000 feet, providing a cooler respite compared to the coast below. The landscape features steep canyons, ridges, and several high-clearance roads and trails that wind through the forest, connecting campers and hikers to nearby landmarks like the Ventana Wilderness and Big Sur coast. Historically, the region was used by indigenous peoples such as the Esselen, and later saw logging activity in the early 20th century before being designated as a protected forest area. Pine Ridge Recreation Area is especially known for its primitive camping sites along Pine Ridge Road, providing a rustic but accessible experience for nature lovers and backpackers. Popular activities include day hikes on the Pine Ridge Trail, bird watching for species like the California condor, and seasonal wildflower viewing in spring. The area attracts visitors looking for solitude as well as those venturing farther into the nearby wilderness. The combination of forested slopes, panoramic views, and proximity to Big Sur’s dramatic coastline makes this recreation area a treasured spot for outdoor enthusiasts.
